ELENA BASAGLIA
Head of Partnerships & Product Downstream
Gemfields
She began her career in jewellery retail at the age of 18 at one of the most renowned ateliers in Milan – where she learned from the Master Jeweller – and subsequently in London and New York. During this time, she has worked for some of the finest names in jewellery, becoming an expert in her own right.
Elena studied History of Art in Milan, taught by the daughter of Walter Lazzaro, the “artist of silence”, where she wrote a dissertation on jewellery in the Art Deco period, and at the Gemological Institute of America in New York, where she graduated with a Graduate Gemologist Diploma.
Her passion for gemstones has allowed her to travel, attend trade events, and meet some of the world’s most renowned gemological experts.
Since joining the Gemfields Group ten years ago, initially as store manager for Fabergé in Harrods, Elena has continued to make her mark. Her present role, heading the Downstream section of Gemfields’ supply chain, requires a breadth of trade knowledge combined with extensive relationships with some of the most affluent collectors and influential dealers. Elena is involved in the entire journey of a gemstone, allowing her to remain constantly surrounded by the gems she is so passionate about.
